Important Rules for iTunes Movie Rentals Before You Fly
Renting a movie on iTunes (Apple TV app) is a popular way to pass the time on long flights, but many travelers board the plane only to discover their movie won't play without internet! Here are the rules to follow:
- Download Completely While on Home Wi-Fi: Renting does NOT automatically download the file. You must tap the cloud download icon and wait for 100% completion before leaving for the airport.
- Start Playback for 5 Seconds Before Leaving: Once you press play, your 48-hour rental countdown begins. Starting playback while connected to Wi-Fi confirms licensing authorization and prevents airplane DRM authorization lockouts.
- Cross-Platform Alternative: If you are traveling with an Android tablet or laptop that doesn't run the Apple TV app, convert your video to standard MP4 with an iTunes M4V Converter before boarding.
